It looks like being a great strawberry year at Maynards, especially in June. Because it is an early year much of the crop may be through by the time we start raspberries and cherries, so a few trips just for strawberries may be necessary.
The season kicks off with Vivaldi, which has a much better flavour than the earlies we used to grow. We may need to open the farm early , at the very beginning of June if they are ripe so look out for announcements.
Three varieties will ripen through the middle of June: Salsa, Malling Centenary and Elegance. Centenary has received a lot of publicity for great flavour and this will be our first year growing it.
Hopefully Lucy, Florence and Malwina will take us well into July but do not leave it too late, I have a feeling we will run short at the end of the season.
The price for pick your own strawberries is £3.40/kg.
