There is a reasonable crop of gooseberries this year.Unfortunately there are quite a few dead and sick looking bushes in the Invicta (green) variety, probably related to the soil being waterlogged for too long in the winter. Best picking will be in late June and early July, if we can keep the pigeons off!
Invicta is our main green variety which freezes extremely well for winter crumbles. Over the last few years we have been short of gooseberries and many of the red Xenia have been picked green, but I hope this year they will be allowed to ripen to a deep wine red when they are a superb dessert fruit. We are also growing the late red variety Captivator.
